I am so thrilled to be having Chantal from Painted Tea Cup on The Ham & Cheese Of It today! She is one of my all time favorite bloggers and I love reading her amazing newsletter about essential oils. Her essential oil knowledge is way beyond the scope of what I could ever hope to achieve. Make sure you read her new essential oil ebook ready for download today! It’s a great read and perfect for someone who doesn’t know what to put in their diffusers or roller bottles once their oils come in.
Essential oils are a wonderful way to naturally support your family’s overall health and wellness. If you are new to using essential oils, you may be feeling overwhelmed with all the information out there and you may not sure where to start. This is a normal feeling that many people have but I promise it doesn’t have to be hard.
Something that would have made my essential oil use easier when I started out would have been using roller bottles. I used to think roller bottles were silly and created extra work for the essential oil user which is why I did not use roller bottles for a very long time. However, thankfully I eventually realized that the opposite was true and started using roller bottles more and more.
So why does using a roller bottle make essential oil use easier?
When you first get started with essential oils you may have many questions especially regarding how to dilute essential oils for sensitive skin and for use with children. Also, going through the process of diluting your oils every time you use them can be quite annoying and not to mention messy. These things may even deter you from using your essential oils all together!
The wonderful thing about roller bottles is that you can make the blend once and then you can use it whenever you need! Most roller bottles are 10ml in size which will last you for a very long time (of course this will vary depending on how often you use your blend).
Diluting Essential Oils
As a rule, when using essential oils with toddlers you want to dilute one drop of essential oil and 1 teaspoon of carrier oil. If you’re using essential oils with children, it is important that you always dilute your oils as they are extremely potent.
To dilute essential oils for school aged children:
- Add 6 drops of the essential oil of your choice to a 10ml roller bottle
- Then fill the rest of the bottle with a carrier oil. Common carrier oils include fractionated coconut oil, jojoba oil, and grapeseed oil.
- Be sure to gently shake the bottle before every use.
Depending on the age of your child email need to add a few additional drops however I would start with 6 as it is easier to add more essential oils than it is to further dilute a blend.
To dilute essential oils for babies and toddlers:
- Add 1-2 drops of essential oil in a 10ml roller bottle
- Fill the rest of the bottle to the top with a carrier oil.
Safety note: I always recommend that you consult a medical professional prior to using essential oils with children.
As I mentioned before, some essential oils need to be diluted for people with sensitive skin however there are other essential oils that should always be diluted regardless of skin sensitivity. Essential oils that should always be diluted before you use (even with adults) include: oregano, cinnamon, thyme, clove, and cassia. With these oils you will want to put no more than 6 to 8 drops of essential oil in a 10ml roller bottle and fill it to the top with a carrier oil.
Today I wanted to share a roller bottle recipe from my new ebook Essential Oils Made Easy: DIY Diffuser & Roller Bottle Recipes! This blend is called the Itch-Be-Gone and can be used to soothe occasional irritation including dry skin and bug bites!
What You Need:
- 7 drops of Lavender
- 5 drops of Tea Tree
- 3 drops of Frankincense (optional)
If you plan to use this blend with children use: 3 drops of lavender, 2 drops of tea tree, and 1 drop of frankincense (if you have it)
How to Make it:
- Add the essential oils to your roller bottle
- Fill the rest of the 10ml roller bottle with a carrier oil. I recommend using jojoba oil for skin related blends as it is quite moisturizing however, any carrier oil will work.
- Place the roller bottle top into the bottle and screw on the lid.
- Gently shake the bottle end for end (you will need to do this before every use)
- Simply apply to the irritated area
Using roller bottles really does make essential oil use so much more convenient. They allow you to: pre-dilute your essential oils for use with children and when using ‘hot’ oils, put the bottle in your bag and easily take it with you wherever you go, and apply your essential oils without worrying about making a mess on your hands. While these may seem like simple conveniences, when you are using essential oils regularly, it really does save a lot of time and makes naturally supporting your family’s health and wellness much easier!
Whether you are a long time essential oil user, or you are just getting started with essential oils I highly recommend that you try using roller bottles as they really do make life so much easier.
